PM says he will contact MMA chief over Swat offer

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Friday he would personally contact Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) President Qazi Hussain Ahmed about his offer to help in pacifying the situation in Swat. “If he can help us, it will be most welcome,” he said at a meeting with a delegation from the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE). The situation in Swat is tense and the federal government, on the request of the North Western Frontier Province (NWFP) government, has sent Frontier Constabulary and Frontier Corps to maintain law and order in the area. Shaukat Aziz said the government takes pride in the fact that it has given print and electronic media in the country unprecedented freedom and stressed the need for responsible journalism. President Fasih Iqbal of CPNE apprised the prime minister of the various problems facing the council and called for the setting up of a CPNE House in Islamabad. app
